The COVID pandemic has forever changed how the world operates in all divisions of life. Whether it be grocery shopping, dining, or fitness—nothing has been the same since the dawning of the COVID crisis.
This year has seen significant changes related to gyms and workout routines. As gyms closed many people turned to at-home workouts to achieve their fitness goals. A shortage of gym equipment occurred and the prices of equipment skyrocketed leaving people to creative new workout routines.
Hi, I’m Sean Torbati. As a longtime health and fitness advocate I have seen a variety of workout trends come and go over the years. The unforeseen pandemic crisis has caused individuals to participate in an array of new and exciting workouts.
Let’s take a look at how fitness has changed over the course of the pandemic crisis.
At-Home Fitness Companies
The rise of at-home fitness companies has coincided with massive gym closures. Companies such as Peloton, FightCamp, and Mirror have created innovative ways of achieving the full gym experience from home.
Home gyms traditionally were reserved for wealthy individuals and athletes. As gyms closed many people had to create workout stations within the convenience of their homes. Peloton stock has increased exponentially over the last several months as more people are exercising at home than ever before.
App-based workout classes have also been on the rise as people undergo HIIT and cardio-based routines. As a result, people are becoming more aware that a standard brick-and-mortar gym isn’t necessary for building muscle and losing fat.
Skyrocketing Prices
Nearly all forms of workout equipment dramatically increased in price due to the COVID crisis. Dumbbells, kettlebells, treadmills, and more all became high-priced consumer items as demand soared. The transition to at-home workouts has helped people achieve their fitness goals without ever leaving the house.
The shortage of dumbbells and other weighted equipment has also allowed individuals to become more creative with their fitness goals. Do-it-yourself dumbbells and how-to videos have been posted all over the internet coming up with creative and innovative methods for building workout equipment from home.
The dynamic of at-home workouts has forever changed and many individuals may never return to conventional gyms and boutiques as a result.
The Future of Fitness
When the pandemic ends the future of fitness will never be the same again. Although conventional gyms may reopen their doors—many businesses have suffered a fate of permanent closures. Many people may choose to utilize the flexibility and reliability of home gyms in favor of traditional gym memberships.
Many fitness centers have implemented updated security measures to help them reopen their doors safely and effectively. As the pandemic continues to wane on—it may be months or years before society returns to a state of normalcy. The COVID-19 vaccine continues to be in production but it may be several months before a resolution is found.
During times of shutdown and social dysfunction exercise has become more important than ever before. Maintaining regular fitness goals during times of struggle and disarray is crucial achieving a sense of sanity and stress relief. As millions of people struggle with feelings of loneliness, sadness, and isolation—getting workouts in is now more important than ever.
